If I had been born Karen or Lisa or Sybil, my dad never would have cried in front of an audience of Vegas show-goers. But I was born Holly, and that’s why the cast of the hit musical Hello Dolly sang Hello Holly on the eve of my birth, causing my dear father, who was playing piano in the orchestra, to bawl like a baby.
As I grew, I didn’t show much interest in performing on stage, although my parents didn’t seem to hold that against me. I preferred to listen outside my dad’s studio while he rehearsed with fellow musicians, or to sit backstage at Caesar’s Palace eating Saltines and drinking Shirley Temples while the big stars stood nearby waiting for their cues.
Now that I’m grown, it’s pretty clear that my slightly deviant upbringing nurtured my love of fantasy and its curious characters, unusual landscapes, and wicked schemes. From the moment I took up the pen to begin my first story, dragons, trolls, and witches set up shop at my house, being kind enough to leave room for my husband and daughters. Sometimes, if we're quiet, we catch a glimpse of magic.
