The nonprofit Hollywood Beautification Team was founded by community volunteers in an effort to work with the Hollywood Police in response to increasing levels of gang activity in the Los Angeles neighborhood. The organization initially focused on removing gang graffiti. After earning a $25,000 Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) grant and securing a van donation from Paramount Studios, the Hollywood Beautification Team held a kick off community event on April 4th, 1992. Three weeks later, civil unrest devastated the South Los Angeles area and the nonprofit helped merchants clean up their stores and earned ongoing grants from the CRA for the next three years.

Beginning in 1995, the Hollywood Beautification Team began serving as a City Public Works Contractor, still focusing on graffiti abatement and cleaning. The organization also functions as a state-licensed painting contractor and landscape contractor and works with City Plants to plant trees throughout the city. As the organization now works county-wide, it is officially known as the Los Angeles Beautification Team, though many continue to refer to it as the Hollywood Beautification Team.
