Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles schools have experienced several run-ins over the past few years. Villaraigosa has been trying to gain get a grip on on the Los Angeles schools through both the legislature and the courts. To date, his efforts have been only marginally successful, having been given some get a grip on at the end of last summer. ```````
This episode has at its heart a top school student called Zoner. This innovative lad, who attends Santee Senior School, decorated a bus with graffiti in early March of this year. However for Zoner, the mayor and Los Angeles colleges Superintendent David Brewer were operating on the bus.
Villaraigosas solution to the specific situation was that the boy needed mentoring his mentoring. The mayor proceeded to use to the Los Angeles schools as a coach for Zoner.
The La schools features a set procedure for potential teachers. A one-page application must be first completed by them. Then, they have to submit to a test and fingerprinting. Finally, they're interviewed by the key at the institution in which they desire to coach. The whole process may take up to month to complete.
There currently are 2,000 advisors within the La schools, offering a diverse back ground and experience to the students. Santee Senior High School already has 40-50 mentors on campus at any given week. Film stars and celebrities provide drama and dance lessons. Financial gurus teach students about business and financial planning. Health professionals give attention to nutrition and fitness. The mentor application process has been all followed by them with hardly any criticism.
Although it is clear that the procedures have been created for the safety of the children, Villaraigosa has been very vocal in what he sees as getting through way too many hoops. He's openly accused the Los Angeles schools of rejecting outside help, declaring that the procedures are more evidence that the Los Angeles schools hinder even the best intentions. In his frustration, the mayor has said they're doing every thing possible to refuse his assistance with Zoner.
