I'm an ICFJ-Knight Fellow focusing on health and development journalism in India.
I'm the founder of NetaData, an independent and non-partisan news service dedicated to Indian politics. In 2016, I was a fellow at the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism.
I've covered a lot of ground in news and journalism. As a reporter, I’ve reported on business (CNBC), sports (India Today television, then Headlines Today) and general news (CNN-IBN). I’ve reported on politics, elections and a bit of crime.
But by far my longest stint has been as a news anchor. From 2004 to 2009, I presented an average of three news bulletins a day. This included a talk show called India 360.
In 2009, I went to Oxford University to earn a master’s degree in Indian studies as a Shell Centenary Chevening Scholar.
Upon my return to CNN-IBN in 2010, I helped run the newsroom on the desk, doing all the stuff that happens in the back end. This experience helped me sharpen my management skills.
So there you have it - reporting, anchoring, desk work - all in the space of 12 years. It was time to move out of TV.
In 2014, I left for Change.org as Director of Communications in India, where I picked up skills relevant to a tech company.
In 2015, I was the Editor-News at The Quint, and after exactly a year leading the website along with a colleague, I left to start NetaData.
But wait: a lot of what I’ve achieved would have been possible but for what I call my secret, parallel career.
Starting 2004, I’ve done something on the side every year. I’ve run several blogs, experimented with podcasts, run campaigns and pitched shows. I think this secret career of mine has been as influential as my main career.
I now live in New Delhi but am from Bangalore. And I’m always on the hunt for a good ‘Bangalore’ dosa!
