Hubert Thomas

This is a story of a boy who grew up to become a man. Iwas born in town called Putnam ,Ala ; born to the mother and father of James Thomas and Mary Pearl Williams. iam on of sixteen children who had to scratch just to get food to eat; But The Lord kept us; we later moved to Mobile ,Ala when i was five or six years old searching for a better life in the city; little did i know that large as ourfamily was it would be even worst for us. Inever knew why my mother and father decided to leave the country and move to the city; I guess they got tired of share cropping well that was what they called it; Idid not know like i know now that it was not share cropping at all not when you and your family do all the work yet you get less a third of the money that come from our labor; That is just one part of the story after moving to mobile in 1945 look like the pattern destin to began all over again. we begain be hauled to plantation all over the south part of Ala pickin cotton, Irish potato, sweet potato;we could not find indoor work like we can today; Ilisten to the news today and i hear that farmersare paying the illeagal people eight dollars a hour ; imean those people were just rotten as the pl;ace weleft to come to; they would pay us three cents a basket to harvest their crop. sometime we be blessed if made it home with two or three dollars. Imean these people got rich off our labor; because they would not pay honest wage; The most hurting thing about nobody cared; nobody came to our recue to demand a wage for our labor; When i hear on the news that companies are now making billions and don,t want the people to share in the wealth it seakink to hear. Don,t these people get it slavery was wrong then and it is wrong now. Yes that is what we were durning 40.s and 50,s as i stated above i was 5 years old when my family moved to mobile; i wished a thousand times with as many children as it was of us we most likely would have been better off in country. Iknow we would; no wonder the Bible said hardly arich man going to enter into heaven those who stole from my family will not make it in; They never offered restitution; Hubert Thomas
