Huda Hassan

i'm a writer and a photographer with an interest in diaspora, cultural identity and the intersection of race, gender and pop culture. i'm currently completing my BA in african studies, philosophy and political science at University of Toronto.

i began my career in journalism as an intern for Vervegirl Magazine where i gained valuable experience as an assistant to the Editor-in-Chief. i moved on to work for Pound Magazine where I politicked bullsh*t and interviewed rappers, eventually becoming the publications' Account Manager. with time, i gained a role at Manifesto Festival of Community and Culture where I now work alongside the executive director, Che Kothari. i have been published in The Couchiching Institute of Public Affairs, Vervegirl Magazine, Fuel Inc Magazine, Pound Magazine, Manifesto Festival blog, and various campus papers at University of Toronto. I currently serve as a member of the Board of Directors for The Varsity newspaper.

in early 2011, i co-founded a project entitled THE AFRICANA™: a blog dedicated to providing a space for black women to share stories, thoughts and ideas. through this project, i have participated in several workshops and began the #AfricanaGatherings. i also serve as a program coordinator for a project entitled Glendower Demanding Change: a youth development iniative based in Scarborough, Ontario.

i am also a freelance photographer. i recently had my first exhibit with Gashanti Unity.
