The lake is a popular stop on the iconic Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It has been sacred to the local communities here. Shamans or the Andean Priests express their gratitude to the Pachamama or mother earth here in the form of Apacheta. It is a process of piling stones each on top of the other.

This turquoise lake is a glacier lake. It is formed from the melting snow from the Humantay mountain after which it gets its name.

The only way to Visit Humantay lake is by hiking from the nearest village, Soraypampa. It takes around an hour and a half. The trek offers enchanting views of the Andean highland region. You will also get to interact with the communities here and get an insight to their way of like and traditions.
