I had the opportunity to go to South Africa this past December. I worked at a camp most of the time, but one day we went to a Kids Club in Diepsloot, South Africa. Kids from the community came to this facility and volunteers would helped them with homework, and just play with them, similar to the YMCA. This little girl I'm playing with re-named herself Alicia Keys. She was the most joyful little girl despite her extreme poverty. It broke my heart when Alicia Keys and her friend went through my backpack and asked for my waterbottle and some peanut butter crackers. For a second the fun stopped and they proceeded search my bag and ask for money. I was astonished to see the struggle these girls are facing at such a young age. I learned gratitude on an entirely new level and these girls will forever remain in my thoughts and prayers.
