Huw Walmsley-Evans

Brisbane, Qld Australia

Huw Walmsley-Evans is a film, media, and cultural studies scholar, and film critic, based in Brisbane, Australia.

My scholarship focuses on film criticism as a cultural institution. I attempt to find out how film criticism is practiced, and what the persona of the film critic consists of. I am currently researching the history of Australian film criticism, from the first newspaper reviews in the late 19th century to the varied practices we recognise today.

I have taught film, media, communication and cultural studies at the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and SAE Creative Media Institute.

I am the essays editor of the online film criticism publication Screen Machine and a contributing editor to international menswear and culture magazine Manuscript. I have also appeared talking about aspects of film and film criticism on the ABC's The Drum, Radio National, and The Conversation.
