In Denmark they have a word for this feeling – ‘Hygge’ (pronounced “hue-guh”). We don’t really have an equivalent single word in English, but words such as cosiness, happiness, security, kinship, intimacy, charm or closeness can all be used to describe it.
We experience the feeling in simple moments such as a short walk in the countryside, making a coffee or lighting a candle. It could be the intimacy of enjoying a good book in our favourite chair or the kinship of a family meal. The act of creating homely moments or celebrating an event or occasion can surpass any buzz that our hectic lives or success at work may offer.
