Ian McInnes
Growing up in Whitby and Scarborough gave me a love for the outdoors that has continued through my life. I have worked with young people in adventurous settings for over 15 years and am pleased to have been selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Labour Party in the constituency.
When I was 18, I moved away from the area, because like so many young people, I felt that there was nothing here for me. With no jobs and no prospects, I wanted to see what else life could offer me. I didn't go to university, the grants scheme had just stopped and there was no way forward. I said to myself if I ever get to a point in my life where I want do something so badly, that I need a degree and in doing so get myself in thousands of pounds worth of debt, I would do it then.
I have never needed to.
Instead I started working with children and young people, taking them climbing and canoeing, improving their confidence, their communication skills and changing their outlook on life.
Engaging with young people, helping them find their voice is something I am so very, very passionate about.
It’s also what we need to do here. Campaigning for Real change means electing an MP that knows what it’s like to grow up here and that knows the struggles that people face day in, day out. It means electing an MP that is honest, approachable and humble.
Please do get in touch, I'd love to hear from you.
