W. Ian Bourland is an art critic and historian on faculty at MICA in Baltimore. He teaches about modernism and contemporary art.

He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2011, and is an alumnus of the Whitney ISP.

Formerly, he was a preceptor in the MAPH program at the University of Chicago and has also taught at The Barnes Foundation, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, and the University of Illinois.

His writing has appeared in a variety of print and online publications, including Artforum, The Economist, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Chronicle of Higher Education,frieze, and aperture.org, among others.

He was previously the editor of the Chicago Art Journaland has contributed scholarly work to NKA, Critical Inquiry,
