Idalia Gutierrez
I’m Idalia, a fierce, Femme, Puerto-minican poet, woman, queer, healthcare advocate, daughter, lover, sister. I began writing for myself, until I looked around me and realized the scarcity of voices like mine out there – so I write for YOU. The new immigrant struggling to make ends meet in a system that does all it can to make it harder to simply work and live. I write for anyone who’s experienced human cruelty firsthand. I write for that kid in kindergarten who cried after someone made fun of his accent, and my little sister who asked me to pass the “people colored crayon” (peach). I write for the transgirl who smiled after putting on lipstick the first time. I write for anyone who ignores those that are disadvantaged -or worse has the privilege enough to never even see they exist. My writing is primarily for those in my community who don’t realize they can and should speak.
