Ilya Sherbovich is the president of the Moscow based private investment firm, United Capital Partners (UCP). The firm, which manages around US$3.5 billion worth of assets, has interests in a wide range of sectors in Russia, including retail, manufacturing, mining and oil and gas. More recently, UCP has entered the international market, investing in an Indian oil refinery alongside Rosneft and the Geneva headquartered commodities trader Trafigura.
Ilya Sherbovich established UCP shortly after the acquisition of the Russian investment firm, United Financial Group (UFG), by Deutsche Bank in 2006. By the time of the sale, Sherbovich was one of the three largest shareholders in UFG, having joined the firm shortly after it was established in the mid-1990s by the prominent US investment banker Charles Ryan and former Russian Minister of Finance, Boris Fedorov. During his tenure at UFG, Sherbovich was instrumental in turning what was initially a brokerage firm, into a one of Russia’s most successful independent investment and financial services groups. As President and, later, head of investment banking, he was involved in a number of high profile M&A deals and IPOs for the blue chip Russian companies such as Gazprom, Lukoil, Magnit, Multon, TNK BP and also helped with advise and financing to a large number of fast growing mid-size private companies.
Prior to UFG, Ilya Sherbovich worked at the International Finance Corporation, which provides investment advisory services on behalf of the World Bank to enhance private sector growth in developing countries. Sherbovich completed a degree in Economics and Business Management at the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics in 1995. During his studies, Ilya Sherbovich joined the Russian Federal Commission on Capital Markets, where he worked for the regulator’s Capital Markets Surveillance division.
