I am the principal of Gatewell Group, a Los Angeles firm working the US restrictions on foreign-produced connected hardware — the FCC Covered List and the import, marketing and authorization rules that now govern it. I work both sides of that gate: Conditional Approval filings for manufacturers in Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Europe, and origin-evidence diligence for the US importers, distributors and project developers who buy from them. I am the author of the Gatewell Protocol for Origin Evidence, an open and free documentation standard for what “sufficient evidence” of non-covered origin actually looks like. Before this, fifteen years building, running and selling businesses in heavily regulated industries — healthcare practices, consumer lending, retail. I came to this work as an operator, not a lawyer.
