Dunedin, New Zealand

I am a third year Psychology and Education student at the Universtity of Otago, New Zealand.

This semester I am studying Inclusive Education. As part of this paper I have decided to create a blog based on the research and books I encounter based on the portrayal of disabilities in children’s literature, namely picturebooks.

The approach I take is from a social model of disability. Disability is due to barriers created by society. I aim to review books from such a perspective and use research to address their inclusivity.

“…a disability, whether retardation, learning disabled, deafness, emotional disturbance, or other classification, is never experienced apart from its social and cultural context.
Disability, like other personal qualities, derives its meaning from the ways people respond to it, interpret it, and experience it.”
