Irving Hamer

One of the finest minds in public education today, Irving Hamer, EdD, recently served as deputy superintendent of academic affairs, technology and innovation, and school operations for Memphis City Schools in Tennessee. After earning a master’s degree in administration and a doctorate in learning environments and social policy, both at Harvard University, Irving Hamer worked as a headmaster in Maryland and a deputy commissioner at the New York State Department of Education. He developed policy and provided fiscal oversight as the representative of Manhattan on the New York City Board of Education. He served as an executive vice president of the education books division at Simon & Schuster for nine years and later instructed graduate students as a professor of education at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Throughout his career, Hamer has been self-employed as an education and social policy consultant, work which he continues today.

At present, Irving Hamer is a partner and senior consultant at P3 Strategies, LLC, based in Jackson, Mississippi. As a consultant, he works with clients in the fields of private and non-profit enterprise, health care, and education to make opportunities available for children in underserved communities in the United States. Since 2012, Hamer has spearheaded the Mississippi Education Reform Collaborative and its focus on teacher recruitment and retention, contributed significantly to education reform in Mississippi, and manages reseller services in partnership with Tableau Software, Inc. in education markets across the country.
