Listen to my music

Isaac Maupin, a native of northeastern Ohio, is a Ph.D. student in Musicology. He holds a Bachelor of Music (2013) in guitar performance from Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. During his tenure as an undergraduate, Isaac performed in many jazz and popular music ensembles, as well as Otterbein’s classical guitar quartet. He has studied guitar with Karl Wohlwend, improvisation and jazz composition with Jay Miglia, and composition with Jennifer Merkowitz and Charlie Wilmoth. Before coming to UK, Isaac lived in Boston, where he played in several different musical groups.

Isaac’s research is focused on Jazz in the 1960s, and he has more specific interest in the cultural influence on formations of new sub genres, such as fusion. He has a particular interest in the improvisations and the artists present on the Miles Davis records In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

Isaac still performs; he has an active band in the Boston area and also plays in one of the University of Kentucky’s Jazz combos.
