My name is Kendal and my favorite letter is "Y". It's my preferred letter because it’s fun to write, and it doubles as my preferred question: why. "Why" is arguably the best question because it requires more. Who, what, when, and where are all definite. Who is that? Me. What is that? That's a tree. When is the meeting? 3:15. Where is President Obama right now? In the White House where he belongs. But asking why takes time and thought, or at least it should. I get asked why all the time. Kendal, why are you so small? Probably because I didn’t drink enough milk in my formative years. Kendal, why do you like the color yellow so much? Because it makes my skin glow, and the sky turns a wonderful yellow-orange color after it snows, the clouds thin, and the sun starts to set. Kendal, why is your brother so much cooler than you? That’s easy: he’s older, crazier, and way more reckless; therefore he’s up for anything. Kendal, why are you screaming at that car? Because they’re an IDIOT and their family is made up of IDIOTS, AND THE SPEED LIMIT IS 45 BUT THEY’RE GOING 6! Kendal, why are you writing about the word why? I couldn’t think of anything better to write about. I honestly just enjoy reading young adult fiction about love, and pretending I know things about other things. I am no expert on old English Literature and famous poetry. What I do know though, is that the question “why” encourages critical thinking. I love “why” because the Socratic Method is my favorite form of dialogue. It’s a way of continuing the conversation without contributing too much but still unearthing information in the process.
