Jhay De Jesus

Mandaluyong, Philippines

I am Joseph Michael de Jesus, I have so many nicknames depending on who is addressing me. I am Mike to my relatives, Joseph to my close friends which transformed into Jhay for some of my inner circle when I started using this nickname on the last company I worked with, some of my former colleagues call me Miko, too.

My interest with theater and artsy stuff started in elementary where i mostly join speech fests, declamation contests, choir and other organizations related to anything about arts.

This interest grew bigger when i got to High School where I started coaching a lower-year student whenever she will join declamation and oratorical contests.

I took up primary education in a private school which at that time was one of the most popular private school in our place and continued high school in a public high school in our place as well. After that, I went to a state university which happens to be known for giving birth to political activists in the country.

I remember, when I was still in grade 4, i used to say that I want to be a very popular and well-loved stage actor. That was actually what i said to myself the day I decided to take an entrance examination on the first university I went to.

I can also remember the time when I said to myself that I want to try being a political activist, and that's what I told myself when I decided to take the entrance exam in PUP.

And that time came, I became a theater artist and a political activist at the same time. We've been doing plays, skits, songs, poems (some are for speech choirs) and any art form that we can use to tackle the people's issues and struggles. For many years that I have been a part of this cultural-political organization, I have learned a lot especially when it comes to issues affecting the people's interests.

I have learned that there is more to just being an individual, I've learned that we are all just a small part of the society and we must involve ourselves if we really want this society to be a better place for us and the future people in it.

Yes, I am a thespian, furthermore, I am an activist.
