I have always thought of myself as an “old soul”. Yes, I love my iPhone, celebrity drama, modern Hollywood cinema, and mainstream country music; However, a part of me will always wish I was born in a time before me. I feel a connection and a desire to belong to the past, a feeling I have felt my entire life.
I grew up on road trips in the backseat of my dad's GMC listening to artists such as Elton John, Queen, Garry Rafferty, Fleetwood Mac, Niel Diamond, and Billy Joel. The jolt of nostalgia I feel every time I hear the song “Rocketman” by Elton John or “Rocky Racoon” by The Beatles is such a heartwarming feeling I can not describe. Music was real back then. Not saying it isn't now, but the instruments and lyrics of certain 70s songs will always remain superior to music made today (in my opinion).
Aside from my music taste, I find myself to be mature for my age and more self-aware. Now, I know that should be expected of most 19-year-olds today, and maybe I am just conceited, but I love to help and give advice to everyone who needs it.
I am also a hopeless romantic. Romantic comedies and dramas are my favorite movies, and I truly believe the concept of romance has dwindled over the years. Noah writing love letters to Allie for a full year with no response (via The Notebook) is the standard I have established for love. Seeing my parents' relationship and happy marriage has also taught me a lot about love and has led me to truly find it beautiful.
Although I call myself an “old soul”, I do take advantage of today's time. Yes, I will always wish I could attend drive-in movie theatres, and go rollerskating with my friends, but I love my life. I wouldn't change it for the world.
