This past summer was the worst time of most people's lives. Thanks to the global pandemic, we weren't allowed to hang out with friends, go shopping, watch movies, eat at restaurants, or go on vacations. However, it turned out to be the most productive period I've ever experienced.

I went to the doctor for my yearly check-up and was shocked at the news I received. I wasn’t overweight anymore; I was faced with a new word: obese. I realized I needed to change, and this was the perfect time. There was no stress from high school, college applications, or the SAT's. For two and a half months, my only priority was myself. I committed to intermittent fasting and ate only between the hours of 11AM to 3PM. It was a rigorous adjustment, and I realized that diets can only be done if you have the right mentality.

In addition, I began working out a lot. I would run a mile daily and do calisthenics for two hours a day. Somedays, I would do 100 push ups. Other days, I would target my abdominals with at-home workout videos. The rest of the week was devoted to arms and legs. I started incorporating tennis for extra cardio, and it was also very enjoyable. Working out was mentally easier than dieting because I enjoyed pushing my limits and growing my muscles.

By August, I lost 43 pounds and reached a normal BMI range. While others spiraled in isolation, I learned to turn this time into a gift. I learned to value my health and my happiness. I learned more about my body and fitness. I am continuing my personal growth by balancing academics with time spent at the Ramsey Center.
