Jess has been an active and passionate journalist for nearly her entire life. She began writing for a monthly children’s publication in elementary school and, like any good reporter, never gave up on her pursuit of understanding and improvement. That journey took her all the way to Western Michigan University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
She had the privilege of learning from many talented, ambitious and successful journalists throughout her college career, from whom she gained both technical skills and an in-depth understanding of the industry that classes alone could never have taught. After graduating, she worked for the Kalamazoo Gazette as a freelance contributor, though she quickly culled favor from the numerous editors and soon received enough assignments to work full-time hours without having made a full-time commitment. With daily deadlines, she gained valuable newsroom experience and truly came to understand the fervor she had for both the lifestyle and responsibilities of a modern day reporter.
