My desire to become an English teacher stems from my positive experiences as an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher as well as my appreciation for English as a subject. In terms of my professional experiences, I have been an ELL teacher for the past several summers both teaching students abroad in Taiwan and in Canada. One of the reasons why I want to become an English teacher is that in helping students acquire English skills, I provide them with a platform where they could communicate and where I could reach them as a teacher. Regardless of all of our biases, learning English allows my students and I to come together to appreciate our differences and learn about issues outside of the textbook curriculum. Furthermore, I want to be an English teacher because I truly love the subject and continue to experience its benefits. Living in Canada and in a world where English remains to be one of the major languages, English serves a means to help students communicate and learn in an ever changing world. In conjunction to being a platform for global communication, basic elements of English language education including reading, writing, comprehension, and media literacy are essential skills for all students regardless of the nature of their personal and professional futures.
