Jabulile Dlamini
Mother, Teacher, and Student in South Africa
Deeply vested in identity and African culture, I am an educator in the making, who seeks to help learners become excellent academics and proud Africans. To appreciate education outside of superficial gains, but rather as a means of intrinsic maturity and as a vehicle to fuel a uniquely African effort towards progress.
I strongly believe that educational reform –from a cultural perspective – is still greatly needed in a nation like South Africa, a nation which has a profound history and a present still stained by the latter. In the field of mathematics in which I specialise as an educator, I wish to impart to young children, an understanding of mathematics that far supersedes the false notion that it is merely mental exercise, or a necessary course of study to pursue worldly gains, but rather for learners to perceive mathematics as a portal to the soul of the universe, a language that can facilitate greater awareness of everything, and most importantly to this, I desire for African learners to confidently view this understanding of and approach mathematics from the perspective of their cultural inheritance and their heritage. All that I desire is all that I also, am still learning.
I am a proud mother, a lover of music and an advocate of health and wellness. By my Creator’s grace, I intend to live long enough to see my great grandchildren all grown up.
Africa my beginning, Africa my pride
