Jack Carlson, founder and creative designer of Rowing Blazers, is a former professional coxswain and a three-time member of the US national rowing team. He’s also the author of the best-selling coffee-table book, Rowing Blazers.
Carlson has long been fascinated with world history and the evolution of art and fashion. After finishing his undergraduate in Classics and Chinese Studies at the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown, he earned a doctorate in archeology from Brasenose College, Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar. His interests include everything from the use of flags and pageantry in the ancient world to the rise of streetwear in the 21st century.
This former athlete is a World Championships bronze medalist, Head of the Charles champion, and Henley Royal Regatta Champion. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, the Explorers Club, and the Royal Numismatic Society. He serves on the board of the Row New York, a non-profit that helps young people from all backgrounds excel in the sport, and a life-long member of the prestigious I.B.F. in Paris, the Oxford University Boat Club, and the Archeological Institute of America.

He’s worked with a wide range of brands, including Barbour, Seiko, FILA, Warm & Wonderful, Sperry Top-Sider, Noah, Lands’ End, J. Crew, J. Press, Ralph Lauren, and the NBA. His understanding of how minor adjustments in garment wear spark worldwide trends is unparalleled.
His works include academic articles that have been featured in Antiquity, the New England Classical Journal, and Foreign Policy, and modern essays that have appeared in The New Yorker, Vogue, Ideamensch and GQ. He’s also penned more light-hearted fare, like his illustrated book A Humorous Guide to Heraldry.
