Jack Byrnes

I am currently a Junior at Duke University, and love every minute of it. I'm a student ambassador for President Brodhead with the Dukes and Duchesses program where it is my job to present my university to groups ranging from foreign administrators to local community-based groups. Some of my responsibilities include dining with University Fellows, hosting the Board of Trustees during their meetings at Duke, and attending fundraising events. I'm also an active member of Sigma Chi fraternity. This year is an exciting time for us as 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of our chapter's inception. Finally, I am involved with the Duke Catholic Center which has provided me an outlet to reflect and take a step back from the hustle and bustle of Duke. I've served as a coordinator of the freshman retreat, leader of a Bible study, and even participated on a mission trip abroad in Guatemala.

Back in the classroom I excel in my major - Public Policy Studies. I'm also interested in the intersection between policy, health care, and globalization. In addition to Public Policy, I am pursuing certificates in Global Health and Markets and Management. During the fall semester I had the opportunity to study abroad in Glasgow, Scotland where I studied British politics and discovered a whole new culture - sampling haggis, traveling to Loch Ness and St. Andrews, and attempting to decipher the Scottish accent. I am passionate about discovering the world around me, learning new things, and keeping up with current events (The Economist, Politico, and The Wall Street Journal are some of my favorites). After graduation I hope to work for a dynamic firm that will help me develop my passions and give me the opportunity to work hard and excel.
