Jack Nettleton
student in Nottingham, United Kingdom
I am an advocate of all things green. The benefits of plants are endless and tangible. My fascination with plants began at a young age with my father – an agronomist – constantly talking to me about plants and N:P:K. Then, I wasn’t interested, however since then, through a multitude of experiences, I found myself finally agreeing with him.
My name is Jack Nettleton; I am a second year Horticulture undergraduate at Nottingham Trent University. After spending some time in the hospitality industry, I decided it was time to put some real knowledge and experience behind my previously trivial familiarity with the plant kingdom and returned to college to gain relevant qualifications to get me to university.
My first love has always been trees, natures living skyscrapers, their dominance of the landscape and their underground complexities. This was a large reason for my choice in Horticulture. After battling with idea of arboriculture, I realised I yearned for something more cognitive, dynamic and with more of a positive impact.
Currently, my interests are biosecurity and food security, specifically tree pathology and sustainable and innovative food production. My goal is to internship over the summer of 2018 with the Forestry Commission, to eventually volunteer in the research department. There I hope to gain an insight in to how they approach tree biosecurity and biosecurity in general. I also intend to spend some time in a commercial hydroponic establishment, such as the Flowerpot Men in Nottingham.
I enjoy being challenged and in years to come, I hope to be in a working environment that does stimulate me, in an industry that is forward thinking, dynamic and sustainable.
