I started working in the summer going into junior year in a coffee warehouse making $12 an hour. I worked four days a week and it was not worth the money whatsoever. I did that job for the whole summer and made a decent amount of money.

The following summer I decided I didn’t want to work that job or any job that I couldn’t choose my hours. That’s when I came up with the idea to create my landscaping business. I shared this idea with my brother, and we got to work immediately creating our advertisements. We posted these ads on Nextdoor and had job offers very quickly.

At first, we didn’t know how to quote these jobs to make the most amount of money possible, yet we were still making more money than any of our friends. We ran that business through the summer learning from our mistakes and becoming better each day.

After my brother left for college, I continued to run that business and expanded the types of jobs I did. I started to do “odd jobs” for people. I was getting more job offers than I could handle, so I decided to hire some of my friends to do these jobs in which I would take a small percentage of the jobs’ earnings. To date since the beginning of last year, I have made more money than I could have imagined when I was working in that warehouse. Not only did I make good money, but I have improved my entrepreneurial and customer service skills which will benefit me throughout my life.
