James Rondeau

James Rondeau serves as the President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, a role he has held since 2016. He began his tenure in 1998 as Associate Curator of Contemporary Art and served as Dittmer Chair and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art from 2004-2016. He has published extensively on contemporary art and curated more than 70 exhibitions, including major shows such as "Steve McQueen" (2012), "Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective" (2012), and "Jasper Johns: Gray" (2007), which was voted Best Monographic Exhibition Nationally by the American Section of the International Art Critics Association. He served as Commissioner and Co-Curator of the United States Pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. Since 2016, he has led the museum through periods of reflection, evolution, and growth, supporting pivotal acquisitions and appointing scholars to lead curatorial teams. He is an advocate for training and mentorship programs for both museum staff and the next generation of museum professionals.
