James Flanagan

Chicago, Illinois, United States

I am a retired Technology Director. I have been:

Director of Technology of the Maine Township High School District in Illinois.

Instructional Technology Coordinator at the Glenview School District.

While in Glenview I led the team that developed "TREEs" (Technology Rich Education Environments) a model program that combine technology, constructivism, student negotiated curriculum, ubiquitous computing and the Internet with a multi-grade, cross-curricular, open environment.

I helped found, was president of, and am still a member of Illinois CTO.

I am a founding member, past president, and current member of Illinois Computing Educators.

I am currently chair of the Advanced Engineering Task Force of the Illinois Century Network (the state ISP for Illinois).

I am also a member of the Governing Board of the IlliniCloud (the new school owned cloud computing consortia for Illinois).

Finally, I am a consultant who assists schools with the planing and assessment of their use of technology.

I firmly believes that the appropriate use of educational technology is transformative. However, as leaders in our field, it is our duty to balance our enthusiasm for new technology with good pedagogy, research, planning and an understanding of the political and organizational structures with which we must work.
