Exemplifying the ideal of the ‘warrior monk’, I have dedicated over half of my life to the study of Buddhism, Zen in particular, and the practical applications both eastern and western philosophy have to life. I have also undergone a rigorous education in academic philosophy, achieving my MA (Hons) and MPhil (Distinction) at the University of Glasgow, culminating in ten years of doctoral study at the prestigious Durham University where I taught students and supported the internationally renowned Department of Philosophy by speaking at and organising conferences in the UK, Europe and Japan.

An expert martial artist, I have over 20 years of training including Karate, Judo, Thai Boxing and Shorinji Kempo. I achieved the distinguished rank of yon dan or 4th level Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo and for over a decade was a coach, instructor and national examiner. I have made several pilgrimages to Japan to practise with and learn from Buddhist priests. I have taught over 400 students to date, several to black belt standard.

Having worked as a Civil Servant, I observed the stress and other issues that can accompany a corporate lifestyle and this led to me leaving my career in the Civil Service to found a company that would be able to help people lead a less stressful and happier existence through active philosophy.
