James Downey

I work for Dell Services as a Solution Architect helping clients improve business processes through the innovative application of technology. I'm passionate about working with IT to deliver business value to organizations.

I keep a blog, The IT Business Case, where I explore topics related to the creation of business cases for IT projects. In my experience, IT departments that fail to select projects and track value through business cases almost inevitably fail to execute projects effectively and deliver value. See my post on The Five Reasons IT Should Care about Business Cases to understand why I care so much about business cases.

In addition to technology, I have a strong interest in business process modeling, project management, and managerial accounting, which I think are key to translating technology projects into business results.

I have a PhD in History and Economics from Indiana University, Bloomington, and, while I chose a career in IT rather than academia, I still enjoy research and writing, which makes makes blogging quite enjoyable for me.

Outside of work, I enjoy bicycling with my family along the San Francisco Bay Bike Path and coaching my daughter's soccer team in the Foster City AYSO.
