James Brown

New York

James Brown served more than 20 years as a New York City area middle school educator and administrator prior to accepting his current position as an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. From 2001 to 2009, he held the position of Principal at Baldwin Middle School located in the NYC hamlet of Baldwin, New York, where he provided daily supervision to more than 200 employees and 1,300 students. The school underwent a series of dramatic changes during the course of Mr. Brown’s tenure, including a complete overhaul of faculty management policies and an ambitious integration of digital learning products and services. These changes would ultimately precipitate a steady yearly increase in the number of Baldwin Middle School students who achieved high scores on standardized New York State assessment tests.

Mr. Brown came to Baldwin Middle School after serving two years as Principal of Mahalia Jackson Middle School in Brooklyn, New York. By implementing a program that he dubbed the Chancellor’s Plan of Excellence, James Brown was able to boost Mahalia Jackson’s overall state English Language Arts scores for level three and four students by 12 percent. Prior to becoming Principal of Mahalia Jackson in 1999, Mr. Brown served over a decade as a teacher, a co-principal, and an assistant principal at a series of public schools throughout Brooklyn.

Honors that have been bestowed upon Mr. Brown over the years include a Performance Award from the New York City Council of Supervisors and Administrators for the 2000/2001 school year and a 2008 Certificate of Recognition from the Town of Hempstead. From 2005 to 2007, James Brown also received official Closing the Achievement Gap recognition through the New York State Education Department.
