Senior Editorial Director and Content Strategist in New York
James Kaminsky is a senior editorial director and digital content strategist with a career spanning both established print publications and fast-evolving digital platforms. He has managed editorial teams and overseen content development for brands including Maxim, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, Realtor.com, and Homes.com.
James was raised in Westport, Connecticut, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Film and Broadcast Journalism from Boston University. While attending college, he contributed to the campus newspaper and completed an internship at the Boston Globe, gaining firsthand experience in journalism. After graduation, he moved to New York, where he started his professional journey in business publishing and eventually became editor-in-chief at Act III Communications. In this position, he led teams producing content across entertainment, business, and technology.
His path later shifted to consumer media, where he worked as a freelance writer and then stepped into senior editorial roles at Men’s Journal and Conde Nast Sports for Women. At Men’s Journal, he helped shape the magazine’s editorial identity and content strategy. His time at Conde Nast allowed him to be involved in the launch and growth of a new publication in a highly competitive market.
In 1999, James Kaminsky assumed the role of executive editor at Maxim, guiding the magazine through a period of rapid expansion in the United States. Later, as editorial director at Playboy, he worked to modernize the magazine’s journalism and photography while maintaining its established character.
James continued his editorial leadership at Rolling Stone and Men’s Journal, focusing on new content strategies and supporting digital growth. He then returned to Maxim, contributing to the brand’s adaptation in a changing media landscape.
Following this, he served as Executive Editor for Life Reimagined at AARP and later as Senior Editorial Director at Realtor.com, where he built and managed a digital news team during a time of significant growth. His latest role at Homes.com involved leading editorial initiatives covering luxury real estate in New York.
Outside of his career, James Kaminsky enjoys cycling, hiking, and films. He now works independently as a consultant and writer, sharing his editorial expertise with a range of clients and projects.
