James Record

I’m James K. Record, an attorney and criminal justice educator with a professional background in criminal law, criminal procedure, and higher education.

Throughout my career, I have worked in different areas of the criminal justice system, including prosecution, criminal defense, and education. Those experiences have shaped my interest in how legal principles work in practice, particularly when it comes to evidence, procedure, and the decisions that can influence a criminal case.

I earned my JD from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and later returned to school to earn an LLM in Criminal Law with Honors from SUNY at Buffalo Law School. I am also affiliated with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences through its Jurisprudence section and am an active member of the Washington, DC Bar Association.

In January 2027, I am set to join Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois, as an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice. I enjoy bringing my experience as an attorney into the classroom and encouraging students to look beyond simple answers, examine the facts carefully, and understand how criminal law and procedure operate in real situations.

My interests include criminal law, criminal procedure, forensic law, evidence, legal education, and criminal justice. Outside of my professional work, I also value community service and am involved with the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, and American Legion Riders.
