An innovative engineer in navigation and communications technology, Dr. James Spilker has received widespread industry recognition for his accomplishments. As co-creator of global positioning system (GPS) technology, which has transformed the world and gained 2 billion users, he earned the US Air Force GPS Hall of Fame Award, Silicon Valley Engineerng Hall of Fame Award, and the Goddard Memorial Trophy. Dr. James Spilker has also received several awards from the Institute of Navigation, including the Johannes Kepler Prize, as well as the Scott Helt Memorial Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
A former member of the US Defense Science Board's GPS Task Force and the Air Force GPS Independent Review Team, Dr. James Spilker has also sat on review boards for the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In addition, Dr. Spilker has served on the Engineering Advisory at Stanford University, where he currently holds a consulting professor position. A key contributor to the development of the engineering program at Stanford, he and his wife recently pledged $28 million to the University for the new James and Anna Marie Spilker Engineering and Applied Science Building.
