James Theard
Retired Psychotherapist, Educator, and Mental Health Practitioner in United Kingdom
James Theard is an educator, counsellor and learning professional whose career of more than 25 years has brought together experience in teaching, mental health support, adult education, charitable work and information technology. Working across these different disciplines has given James a broad professional perspective, with communication, learning and personal development recurring as central themes throughout his career.
James's educational background includes extensive experience supporting young people and adults across academic, vocational and community learning settings. He has taught Maths, English and Sciences across Life Skills, Functional Skills, GCSE and A-Level tuition, working with learners at different stages of their educational development. His responsibilities have included assessing individual learning needs, planning lessons and courses, evaluating portfolios and adapting learning strategies to support students who may not have flourished within conventional educational environments.
Alongside teaching, James developed a substantial professional background in counselling and mental health support. His formal training includes a Diploma in Counselling from Counselling Training Initiatives at Yale College, supported by earlier study covering counselling skills, personal development, counselling theory and reflective practice. His practical experience has been informed principally by Rogerian person-centred therapy and existential psychotherapy and has included supporting hundreds of clients across thousands of live counselling sessions.
James's experience within mental health and community support has also included roles with Chester & District MIND, Wrexham MIND, the Alzheimer's Society and PAPYRUS, together with voluntary bereavement counselling for Hope House Children's Hospice. These positions enabled him to apply skills extending beyond direct counselling and support, including research, fundraising and data analysis. At Chester & District MIND, James successfully secured funding from Western Cheshire PCT towards the development of a mobile counselling service incorporating a telephone helpline, community-based mental health information and multilingual resources.
Adult and community education has formed another important part of his career. James delivered literacy, numeracy, employment and life skills through Shropshire County Council and Voluntary Action Vale Royal. During his work with Voluntary Action Vale Royal, he was rated "outstanding" by an Ofsted inspector, while learners regularly achieved a 100% pass rate on his courses.
James's earlier professional experience provides a further dimension to his background. Before concentrating more extensively on education and counselling, he worked in software training and technical support and taught Computing and ICT. His technical training includes Cisco networking and Microsoft qualifications, providing a foundation in analytical thinking and problem-solving that has complemented his subsequent work in education, research and data analysis.
Academically, James holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with Psychology and a Master of Urban Planning from New York University. His wider professional development has encompassed counselling qualifications, teacher training, assessor credentials, safeguarding and child protection training, alongside his technical qualifications.
The breadth of James's professional experience reflects a career that has evolved across several fields while retaining a consistent focus on people. From technology and teaching to counselling and charitable work, his background combines practical experience with an understanding of communication, individual circumstances and the importance of adapting approaches to meet different needs.
