Following his achievement of the National Lifeguard certification in 2003, James began using the skills he first learned for humanitarian purposes in lifesaving sport. His mulit-sport background of competitive running, swimming, and flat-water sprint canoe and kayaking have helped him lead his home club, the Ottawa Valley Lifesaving Club, to win both provincial and national championships. James was named to the represent Canada internationally in 2012 following a year training in New Zealand and has been the captain of the Canadian National Team since 2014.
