What dietary advice would you give to patients who want to lose weight after the holidays? Is it better, besides the usual amount of exercise, using less fat or fewer carbohydrates? According to a recently published RCT is clear that a low-carb diet has a better effect on weight reduction and cardiovascular risk profile than a low fat diet. The results of this study by James Ward were recently in the Annals of Internal Medicine published. In this study, 148 were men and women randomized, with a blank status with regard to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The aim of the study was to check whether a carbohydrate-restricted diet was better than a low fat diet. Participants were assigned to one of two groups. After 3, 6 and 12 months were examined, and the weight reduction effect on the cardiovascular risk profile.James Ward Review
The low fat diet consisted of a daily energy intake of less than 30% from fat and less than 7% from unsaturated fat and up to 55% from carbohydrates. Participants who followed a low-carb diet, were not allowed to use more than 40 grams of carbohydrate per day. Both groups were given no restriction on the amount of calories per day.All participants held about 80% diet for 12 months full. Participants with a carbohydrate-restricted diet were 3.5 kg lighter at 12 months than those who followed a low fat diet. Participants with a carbohydrate-restricted diet had less body fat and HDL cholesterol ratio, serum triglyceride levels were decreased and serum HDL levels increased. This resulted in an improvement of the cardiovascular risk profile. All of these differences were statistically significant.
Or a low-carb diet, giving thanks to an improved cardiovascular risk, even less actual cardiovascular disease, is not yet clear. Carbohydrate restriction seems in any case better than fat restriction if want to lose weight. That this result can be achieved without a bite to eat less, seems patients like a good start for the New Year.
