James Whittle

Born and raised in Hong Kong James is one of the leading gaming journalists in Hong Kong and has been reporting and reviewing video games for the last fifteen years. Over the past decade he has written reviews for a number of the South China Morning Post’s sections that include; Technology Post, PC Post, Young Post, Sunday Review and Sunday Magazine. An avid gamer, James first began playing video games in the late 70’s spending hours playing arcade games like Pong, Space invaders and Pac-Man. When not in an arcade he spent his time playing Game & Watch LCD games like Helmut and Donkey Kong. His first console was an 8-bit red & white Nintendo Famicom and the first game he played on it was Contra. Now 25 years later James owns a Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PC, PSP, NDS (Lite & XL) and iTouch. Since his return from the US in 2005, James has cemented his position as one of the fore most gaming authorities in Hong Kong’s English media. He has sat down with and interviewed such gaming giants as Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong) and Hideo Kojima (creator of Metal Gear Solid). Currently James is working as freelance photojournalist enjoying the freedom to pursue various pursuits and subjects. For the last year and half he has been freelancing for Popcorn Media Network and as their senior reporter and photographer has been covering technology news in Hong Kong for the company’s Tech and Gadget website Neonpunch. As a modern renaissance man James has also covered stories on music and film for Sunday Young Post and recently art, fashion and wine for PMN’s other websites Winebuzz and Butterboom. James also writes a weekly column in Sunday Young Post, Otaku Zone, that mainly covers Japanese and American pop culture topics like animation, manga, comic books and video games. James has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Computer Arts with an Emphasis on Digital Publishing and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography with an emphasis on Photojournalism and digital photography, both from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco USA.
