James Wusterbarth has led a life defined by experience, service, and an enduring commitment to continuous learning. His pursuit of knowledge and mastery spans multiple disciplines, reflected in an impressive range of professional qualifications. He holds various FAA Pilot Licenses, a DOT Merchant Mariner Master Captain’s License for vessels up to 25 tons, and several boating instructor certifications. His PADI Master Diver credential further highlights his deep enthusiasm for exploring both the skies and the seas.
With over 35 years of service in emergency response, James has earned numerous distinctions, including FLETC-certified Backcountry Law Enforcement Ranger, USPA-certified Skydiver, and Red Cross-certified Lifeguard Instructor. His dedication to safety and emergency management is further demonstrated by a decade of volunteer work with the National Ski Patrol, as well as his service as a DOI Red Card Wildland Firefighter, a National Registry Certified EMT, an ICS Search and Rescue Coordinator, and a FEMA SAR Manager.
In the critical aftermath of the September 11 attacks, James took emergency leave to volunteer at Ground Zero, applying his expertise and courage under highly hazardous conditions. This selfless act stands as a powerful example of the countless hours he has devoted to volunteer service during disasters and emergencies worldwide. As of 2023, his professional and humanitarian efforts have extended across 34 countries, with residence or travel in more than 50 nations globally.
James’s philanthropic contributions are deeply rooted in the United States, where he has been an active supporter of LGBTQ, Hospice, and women’s charities, as well as fundraising initiatives for women’s shelters. His exceptional commitment to serving marginalized communities was recognized through the “Women at Ground Zero Scholarship”, where he became the first and only male recipient. This distinction reflects his dedication to gender equality and compassion in times of crisis.
An educator and communicator by nature, James Wusterbarth spent two years teaching human anatomy at Johns Hopkins Medical School, followed by a five-year tenure as FOX5’s On-Air Health, Fitness, and Nutrition Editor, engaging and educating an audience of more than 200,000 viewers per live broadcast. His career path later expanded into federal law enforcement, a direction inspired by personal tragedy and guided by purpose, where he went on to serve for over a decade across multiple federal agencies.
