Jan Pearson

My artwork is representative, with a tendency towards abstraction. I enjoy painting in a loose style, with brushes and palette knives, and relish employing different media, depending on the subject matter. I works mainly in watercolor, acrylic, pastel and mixed media.

Growing up on a small Missouri farm with forestland, I was inspired by nature, and it became the predominant theme of my artwork. My creativity developed at an early age and it continued to flourish, even as I completed a B.B.A. in Business at Western Michigan University. Later, while studying visual arts at Hope College in Holland, MI. I received their annual Stanley Harrington Art Award. I also took visual arts classes at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI. After moving to Virginia, I attended computer graphics courses at TCC’s Visual Art Center, and through my graphic design work, zoo wildlife and florae also became favorite themes. Other recurring subjects in my work are forest wildlife, horses, pets, children and landscapes.

Throughout my life, I has consistently participated in art workshops and studio art classes and feel especially fortunate to have studied with internationally known artist Ann Meade, D.A., who has been an important influence.

“My work is a merger of styles. I work with enthusiasm and use approaches that allow me freedom. The art process is my avenue of renewal.”

My artwork is currently on display in Chesapeake at 3 Little Blackbirds, in Virginia Beach at The Artists Gallery, in Portsmouth at Riverview Gallery, Portsmouth Gallery Shop and Little Shops on High and in Hampton at the Grey Goose. My paintings were part of both the d’art Center, Tidewater Art Alliance and Agora Art Gallery 2014 exhibitions. My artwork was shown in the Richard Stravitz 30th Street Gallery Exhibition, the outdoorTowne Center and Chesapeake’s Art on the Grove 2013 shows. In 2012, my artwork was juried into the New Waves Exhibition at MOCA and into The Artist Gallery in 2012-2015. Since 2010, I have also been exhibited in libraries and other prominent businesses throughout Tidewater.
