Jane Margold
An expert on globalization, labor migration and anthropology, Jane Margold has lectured at various institutions of higher learning. While in pursuit of her Master’s degree and PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, Margold gained her initial experience in teaching as a graduate student instructor in social-cultural anthropology.
After receiving her doctorate, Jane Margold accepted her first faculty position at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1995. She lectured for the school’s Department of Anthropology for the spring semester before relocating to Hong Kong the following year to conduct field research and teach at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After a year there, Margold moved to Finland and instructed at the University of Helsinki from 1996 to 1998.
In 2001, Margold returned to teaching in the United States, lecturing for the Anthropology Department at Sonoma State University (SSU). At SSU, Jane Margold taught courses that focused on globalization with titles such as “The Global Workplace,” “Transnational California,” “Global Cities” and "Living in a Pluralistic World."
Currently, Margold works at Laney College in Oakland, California, where she teaches two to three anthropology courses per semester. Based on her outstanding classroom presence and extensive contributions to the field, Jane Margold became Co-chair of the Department of Earth and Human Sciences at Laney College in the fall semester of 2010.
In the span of her career, Margold has conducted fieldwork in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Finland as well as published 14 research papers on social issues and colonialism. Her work has also been featured in several academic journals and textbooks including Critique of Anthropology, Suomen Antropologi, Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars, and Development: A Cultural Studies Reader.
