Janet Nelson

McKinney, Texas

Janet Nelson is the guidance counselor and RtI/504 Coordinator at Wolford Elementary School in McKinney, Tx. This is her 26th year as an educator. Born in Kansas City, Kansas to parents of public school educators, she moved to Sherman, Tx in 1970 and received all of her K-12 and undergraduate as well as graduate degrees from schools in Sherman. She graduated from Austin College 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1988. She began her teaching career in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, teaching 5th grade Science, then later teaching 2nd grade and a mixed-aged class of 3rd and 4th graders while attending the University of North Texas to receive her school counseling certification. Completing her school counseling certification in 1995, she moved to McKinney ISD as a middle school counselor at Faubion Middle School and helped open Ruth Dowell Middle School in 1995. In 2000, she moved to her current home, Earl and Lottie Wolford Elementary School. She has deep roots at Wolford, being it’s only counselor and is proud to be one of two staff members who have taught at Wolford since it’s opening in 2000.

Ms. Nelson enjoys building relationships with her staff and families at Wolford, focusing on the life skills of building character and developing a positive and warm climate at her school. In her spare time, Janet likes to read, cook, write, spend summers in Colorado; camping, hiking, and even a little fishing, catching up with friends, and relaxing with her family. She lives in McKinney with her two children and her dog, Maxwell.
