Jared Berry
Jared Berry, conductor and bass, is the chorus master of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music Opera Theatre at the University of Georgia. A candidate for the MM degree in Choral Conducting, he studies conducting with Daniel Bara and voice with Frederick Burchinal. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Berry serves Assistant Conductor of the Men’s Glee Club, the oldest vocal ensemble at the university, and as a section leader in the Hodgson Singers.
Prior to his studies at the University of Georgia, he earned his B.S.Ed. in Music Education from Hofstra University, where he studied conducting with David Fryling and David Ramael, voice with Donna Balson, and piano with Marilyn Lehman. There, he served as Chorus Master for the Hofstra Opera Theatre production of L'incornazione di Poppea, and later as Assistant Conductor & Chorus Master for Die Fledermaus. He was also a co-Conductor of the Hofstra Lab Choir and the Hofstra Lab Orchestra, and a collaborative pianist for opera theatre scenes performances.
In July 2011, Berry began a new role as Assistant Director of Administration at the New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) School of Choral Studies, a summer residential program housed at SUNY Fredonia which brings together seventy New York State high school students to further their studies in vocal arts. There he also serves on faculty as a conductor of a chamber ensemble. Previously, he spent several summers at Interlochen Arts Camp as the Ensemble Manager of the World Youth Honors Choir, Interlochen Singers, High School Operetta, and Festival Choir. Maintaining his career as a professional vocalist, Berry has performed lead roles in several main stage operas including: Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, Orgon in Tartuffe, Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Frank in Die Fledermaus. He sings in the Men & Boys Choir of The Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, NY and continues to serve as a guest Cantorial Soloist at Temple Am Echad in Lynbrook, NY.
In addition to his performing career, Berry is an active member of New York State School Music Association, National Association for Music Education (MENC), and American Choral Directors Association (UGA Chapter non-faculty advisor).
