Jareen Imam is the Director of Social Newsgathering at NBC News. She leads a global, award-winning team of journalists who find, verify and report on stories using social forensic techniques and open source intelligence tools. Prior to joining NBC, Imam was the Head of Social at CBS News, leading a team of producers who executed strategies around audience growth, engagement and development. Before moving to New York, Imam was a producer for CNN in Atlanta for six years, specializing in digital storytelling, user-generated content, and telling stories through social media. In 2020, Imam was honored as a Lauren Brown fellow with IWMF. In addition, she was selected into Poynter’s “Leadership in Tough Times” Fall cohort. In 2019, Imam was named Take the Lead's "50 women who can change journalism" fellows in 2019. And she was inducted into Poynter's Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media. In 2011, she was part of CNN’s newsgathering effort around the Arab Spring, which led to a Peabody award for the network. Imam’s NBC team also contributed to the network’s 2019 Peabody award for the network’s coverage of U.S. troops withdrawing from Syria. Imam is one of the founding members of “Women Do News,” a group with a goal to amplify the voices and profiles of female journalists around the world. Imam is a graduate of Emory University where she majored in English, journalism and creative writing.
