Politician, Activist, and Social Worker in Delhi
Jarnail Singh, born on 15 March 1981, is a self made Indian politician, activist and businessman, who is serving as Seventh and current Member of Legislative Assembly of Delhi. He is serving as the Political Affair In-charge of the Aam Aadmi Party Punjab and Chandigarh from 2020. His efforts as In-charge resulted in massive victories in 2021 Chandigarh Corporation Elections and 2022 Punjab Assembly Elections. He has represented the Tilak Nagar constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2013. ADD FOUNDER MEMBER AAP
Early Life and Education
Hailing from a middle class family, Jarnail Singh was born on 15 March 1981 in Rampur. He was raised in Delhi by his parents, Harbajan Singh, a farmer turned-businessman, and Surjit Kaur. Singh completed his education up to the 12th grade. Due to the responsibility of supporting his family, Singh began working as a full-time technician at an air conditioner workshop right after completing his schooling.
Political Career
Early Involvement
In 2011, when Arvind Kejriwal along with numerous other activists joinedmAnna Hazare to form the India Against Corruption (IAC) group, it broughtmSingh’s attention and he started participating in the movement, which sparked his interest in social activism.
Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections 2013
In 2013, Singh was given a ticket by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to contest the Delhi Assembly elections from the Tilak Nagar constituency. He won the election, defeating Rajiv Babbar, the son of 3-time MLA OP Babbar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by over 2,000 votes, becoming the youngest Sikh MLA in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Electoral Performance
After defeating Rajiv Babbar in 2013 Delhi Assembly Elections by 2,000 votes, In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections too, Singh again defeated Rajiv Babbar, this time by a massive margin of 19,890 votes, securing 57,180 votes (55.1%).
Municipal Corporation of Delhi
In December 2022, AAP won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections with 134 seats, ending the BJP's 15-year control. Following this victory, Singh was nominated as a Member of the MCD by the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Vice President of AAP Delhi Unit
In May 2023, recognizing Singh's efforts and successful leadership, AAP appointed him as the Vice Presidents of the AAP Delhi unit , to ensure efficient party operations in Delhi.
Personal Life
Jarnail Singh lives with his wife, Sukhjeet Kaur, and their two sons, Prathamveer Singh and Harshveer Singh.
