After serving churches since 1986, I began a three-year hiatus from pastoral ministry beginning in 2010. This break provided an opportunity to give needed attention to my family and an opportunity to reevaluate my call to pastoral ministry. I have also had time to reflect on the state of the American local church in the 21st century. As I have traveled across the country for helping a friend start a small business, I have had numerous conversations with people who no longer attend or have never attended church. Sadly, discovered that they have some pretty good reasons. As I return to pastoral ministry, I hope my writings and sermons will reveal much of what I have learned during these past three years and encourage all of us to rethink church.
