In 2012, I quit my marketing job in England to move to São Miguel, a small island in the middle of the Atlantic.
One of nine islands that form the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, São Miguel is breathtakingly stunning. It looks like something that could have been lifted straight out of the pages of a fantasy novel. The colours take on a brightness that I’d never witnessed before; so many shades of green and blue. It’s humid, volcanic and wild.
Within the limits of my teaching hours, I’ve made it my ambition to see and do as much as I can. I’ve swum, snorkelled, hiked, driven, sailed, cycled, ridden and danced my way around each of the nine unique islands. I’ve paraglided (for free) over volcanic crater lakes, cheered on the British win at the Red Bull Cliff Diving Championships and snorkelled with octopuses and dolphins. I’ve discovered the secrets that only the locals know about and eaten my way across the full range of Azorean delicacies.
It’s not always been easy or smooth sailing. But it’s been life changing.
Now my goal is to share my experiences with you, give you a taste of what it is like to live on this remote archipelago and offer you some tips for how you can make your own Azorean adventures.
